Going through experiences of loss is hard for all of us but it can be even harder for children. If our students have had a limited exposure to loss or haven't had support in these times, they may find it challenging to understand and cope with the emotions that come with it. We can explore the themes of Hope and Loss in the safe environment of the classroom so that they are better prepared to be resilient in the tough times.

You can tie this 'See Think Feel Wonder' activity into other classroom learning such as novel studies and social and emotional wellbeing. The aim is to encourage students to dig deeper than just surface-level observations and learn to show empathy for others in the world around them.

The images in this resource depict: Homelessness, sadness, patience, new beginnings, migration and resilience. How I recommend using these Google Slides:

  1. Complete the Bus Stop activity outlined in the printable version with students either just discussing their ideas or recording their responses on post-it notes.

  2. Show students the Google Slides and model how to fill in the 'See Think Feel Wonder' charts, ensuring that you are specific about your personal expectations of length/quality of responses.

  3. Make the slides available for students to complete independently through the 'Create an Assignment' function on Google Classroom (explained below).

  4. Look at the assignments once they have been submitted by your students and use this information to identify prior knowledge, misconceptions and possible areas to explore further in following lessons.

If you haven't used the 'Create an Assignment' function in Google Classroom before, you can check out instructions on Google support. There are also a bunch of videos out there you can watch on Youtube if that's easier for you!

The most important thing is that when you first create the assignment, you select 'Make a copy for each student'. This means that your students will all get their own copy of the slides with their name added to the document title. You and the student will be able to edit their copy of the document and, importantly, your students will not be able to edit your original copy of the slides (yes, I have made this mistake before!).

Please note: When you purchase this resource, you will download a PDF which gives you access to the Editable Google Slides. After clicking the link, you will be prompted to 'Make a Copy' of the resource which will automatically save to your personal Google Drive. Please ensure that you are signed into your Google account to enable this.
